🎉 OUR NEW 2026-27 PROGRAMME 🎉
If you came to our last talk, you will have received a copy of our new brochure, outlining the 2026-27 Programme, which we hope you will find as interesting as ever, with nine talks covering a diverse array of topics- from ancient Greek temples to Agatha Christie, and from the Bayeux Tapestry to Van Eyck, these latter two lectures coïnciding with exhibitions at the British Museum and the National Gallery respectively.
As well as our Christmas party on 16th December and a coach trip to Acton Scott Hall in June, there will be two Study/Exploration days- the first focussing on story of Egypt, as told through its sites and art; the second, upon the stunning prints of Japanese Ukiyo-e (浮世絵) artists, Hiroshige & Hokusai.
Study/Exploration Day details will be added soon, and more information on the lectures can be found here.

NEXT LECTURE
WEDNESDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER
2.00PM (FOR 2.15PM) TO 3.00PM
LUDLOW ASSEMBLY ROOMS
Fancy Liquors and Sky-High Kickers: The Invention of Can-Can, 1830-1950
Speaker: Jonathan Conlin
We kick off our 2026-27 programme with a dance immortalized by Parisian artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and synonymous with the "Gay Paree" of the Moulin Rouge: the French Can-Can.
However, this famous dance in fact owes its origin as much to London as to Paris, with an unlikely cross-Channel exchange of artists, impresarios, and tourists leading to its creation, fusing a revolutionary Parisian dance (the chahut) with London's rather more coy skirt-dancing.
Visitors are very welcome, paying £8 (cash) on the door.
More information, both on this lecture and the speaker, can be found here.
